Heavy Rain

What is the heavy rain?

     Heavy rain is any amount of rain that is considered especially heavy. It isn't a technical weather term. There is no formal definition of heavy rain. But generally KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) define heavy rainfall as rain that falls more than 30mm per hour or 80mm per day, about 10% of annual precipitation falls during the day. Duration of heavy rain is several tens of minutes to hours. It falls intensively in relatively small area(about 10~20km radius) and also accompanied by lightning and thunder.

Heavy rain alert?

     A heavy rain warning is a weather warning issued by KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) during times when a high rate of rianfall was occurring or was forecast. Generally, the heavy rian advisory will be issued when the amount of rainfalls reaches more than 70 millimeters per 6 hours or more than 110 millimeters per 12 hours. And the heavy rain warning will be issued when the amount of rainfalls reaches more than 110 millimeters per 6-hour period or more than 180 millimeters per 12-hour period.
